KOTZEBUE, Otto von (1787-1846). A New Voyage round the World, in the years 1823, 24, 25, and 26 . London: Henry Colburn and Richard Bentley 1830. 8°. 2 aquatint frontispieces and 3 maps, two of these folding (without blanks, plates with some spotting and offsetting). Contemporary red calf, covers panelled in blind, with wide gilt borders, spine gilt, edges marbled (spines slightly faded, extremities rubbed). Provenance : Mr Miles (inscription recording the gift) -- Nelson Rycroft (bookplate, stamp on front blank, and partially erased pencilled inscription). FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, greatly enlarged, of the Russian explorer's last voyage to the Pacific. Kotzebue sailed on the 'Predpriatye' -- the first ship built entirely in Russia (Borba de Moraes). The route to Kamchatka via Cape Horn included visits to Rio de Janeiro, Tonga, Samoa, Marshall Islands, Pitcairn and Tahiti. Kotzebue spent a significant period on the Northwest coast of America, where he was directed to protect the Russian-American Company from foreign competition. Borba de Moraes I, 440; Sabin 38288.
