λ ANASTASIA BELOUS (UKRAINIAN B.1987) REMBRANDT GORILLA Oil on canvas Signed lower right 120 x 100cm (47 x 39¼ in.) Inc. frame 164 x 116cm (64 1/2 x 45 3/4in.) Anastasia Belous was born in Kiev in the Ukraine and has lived and worked in London for over a decade. She is self-taught artist and her technique is inspired by the tradition of old master painters which she applies to contemporary subjects. Her Gorilla series explores the borderline between the animal and human experience. Rembrandt Gorilla pays homage to Rembrandt's celebrated series of self-portaits. Parallels can also be drawn with the work of the 19th Century British painter, Sir Edwin Landseer whose powerful pictures of animals have an anthropomorphic element which applies human traits to non-human entities. Anastasia has been invited by the mayor of Odessa to paint a public mural in the city. Her works are in private collections in London, Hong Kong, New York, Milan, Paris and Moscow. An article about her work was published in Juxtapoz Magazine
