LACORDAIRE, [Jean Baptiste] Henri-Dominique, O.P. (1802-61). La Vie de Saint Dominique... Introduction du R.P.Marie-Albert Janvier. Paris: [Imprimerie Nationale for] Jacques Beltrand 1919. 2 volumes, 4° (312 x 223mm). Vol.I with 20 large woodcuts, 19 woodcut headpieces and 7 tailpieces, all printed in colour, by Jacques Beltrand after Denis, with the prospectus bound in; vol.II with colour progressions of the illustrations and head- and tailpieces in two to six states. BINDINGS DESIGNED BY PIERRE LEGRAIN EXECUTED BY RENÉ KIEFFER, for Georges E.Lang in 1920: black crushed morocco, a curving inlay of dark green (vol.I) or grey (vol.II) morocco at base of front covers on which rests a large silvered disc, lettered, the first and last letters of each line tooled in silver on red morocco inlays, the flat spines lettered, silvered turn-ins, grey silk liners, original wrappers bound in (vol.II very lightly scuffed at extremities), vol.I with grey paper chemise with morocco lettering-piece on spine and morocco edged slipcase; vol.II in original slipcase, both signed at foot of front turn-in: René Kieffer, inv. Pierre Legrain Provenance : Georges E. Lang (sold in 1925). A FINE SET OF VERY EARLY BINDINGS DESIGNED BY LEGRAIN, AND EXECUTED BY KIEFFER IN 1920, shortly after Legrain stopped working exclusively for Jacques Doucet Volume I limited to 330 copies, this number 85, printed for Georges E. Lang (one of Legrain's earliest patrons), volume II without a limitation statement, but obviously strictly limited. This is the second, but first illustrated, edition of an "exquisitely written, but uncritical" ( Ency. Brit. ) work by the great 19th-century French Dominican Lacordaire (1802-1861) which first appeared in 1841. Legrain produced six designs for this work between 1920 and 1929: this was the first, and the only one in two volumes. The compilers of the Répertoire (published in 1965) were unaware of the existence of the second volume, even though the bindings were reproduced three times in art catalogues between 1926 and 1931. Volume II was apparently separated from its companion volume and has only recently been reunited. Répertoire Pierre Legrain 532.
