LAMB, CHARLES. Autograph letter signed ("C Lamb") to Mary Betham, Edmonson, 24 January 1834. 1 page, 4to . WRITTEN IN THE YEAR OF HIS DEATH. Lamb lived with his mentally ill sister for most of his life. He cared for her through long periods of illness, right up to his death, and was often rebuked in his social circle due to her difficult temperament and ill health. Here, Lamb writes to his friend Mary regarding his sister's relapse: "After being well from the end of July to the end of Dec. she was taken ill almost on the 1st day of the New Year, and is as bad as poor creature can be." The strains of a life caring for his sister are prevalent when he writes: "You shall excuse a short letter, for my hand is unsteady. Indeed the situation I am in with her, shakes me sadly...Imagine her kindest love to you, which is but buried awhile." With covering letter from Alfred Ainger, Editor of Lamb's letters to Mr. B. MacGeorge, Hampstead, 4 February 1887. 3 pages, 8vo . Requesting a copy of Scott's letter to Mary Betham.
