Attributed to Andrew Andrews (American, active 1847-1853). A large and expansive Hudson River School painting, probably New York. Oil on canvas, signed l.r. and executed 1850s. Housed in a period style gilt and gesso frame; 36 x 47 in. (sight). While specifics of Andrews' life and career are elusive, it is evident by his style of landscape painting that he was influenced by the work of the Hudson River School. This influence was likely fostered by his time as a student of Jasper Francis Cropsey This painting, with its tranquil and harmonic view of man in an expansive landscape, is characteristic of the Hudson River School style. Another painting attributed to Andrews, View of Lake George, similar in tone and composition to this piece, is part of the White House fine art collection. Condition: Relined many decades ago (conservators label on verso). Two very small areas of flaking and even craquelure.
