Large leaf with the Nishmat (a prayer), from a manuscript in Hebrew, on parchment [probably northern Europe (Ashkenaz), twelfth or thirteenth century] Single large leaf, with two columns, 29 lines in an Ashkenazi square script, with nikkud, openings of readings in larger script, some worm damage and spots and stains, else in fair and presentable condition with wide and clean margins, 365 by 270 mm. The Nishmat is one of the masterpieces of the Jewish liturgy and an important prayer taking its reader on a journey of self-discovery, while urging the supplicant to see God as the source of devotion. It is recorded as is use in the Jewish liturgy as early as the second century AD., and Maimonides in his Mishneh Torah in the twelfth century states that it was recited on the Sabbath in Sephardic practice. The author’s name has been deduced to have been Shimon from an acrostic within the text and this has been variously interpreted to be Shimon ben Shetach (c. 140-20 BC.) or the Apostle Peter (whose Hebrew name was Shimon) by various religious populations.
