LASINIO, Carlo (1759-1838). Pitture a fresco del Campo Santo di Pisa. Florence: Molini, Landi e Campagno, 1812. 2° (595 x 470mm). Double-page letterpress title with engraved vignette, 40 etched and engraved double-page plates (ca. 475 x 805mm) after drawings by F. Nenci (9 plates), A. Niccolini (1 plate), and Lasino (30 plates), publisher's blindstamp in lower corner of plate margins. (Pl. 15 with marginal stains, pl. 31 with minute paper defect, some light marginal spotting, denser on final few plates.) Contemporary russia gilt by Ph. Selenka, Wiesbaden, with his ticket, gilt edges (some light scuff marks). Provenance : plates numbered in pencil in an old hand. FINE SUITE OF PRINTS reproducing frescoes painted circa 1350 in a cloister used as a cemetery for illustrious Pisan citizens up to 1779. 'They must be placed amongst the finest reproductive illustrations of the 19th century and, indeed, were almost the first large-scale reproductions of any cycle of early Italian fresco painting' (Christopher Lloyd Art and its Images: an exhibition of printed books containing engraved illustrations after Italian painting , Bodleian Library, Oxford: 1975, no. 44). A prospectus for the work was published in 1806 and by 1810 28 plates had been issued; a title-page was printed in 1812. The earliest issues have either 40 or 41 unnumbered plates bearing Molini & Landi's publication line with their order left up to the binder. After 1816, six folios of explicatory letterpress were introduced, and the plates (still without numbers) thereafter follow its order. Later still, a 42nd plate was introduced, Molini (now working on his own) erased Landi's name from the matrices, the plates were numbered (I-II, I-XL), the letterpress reset but the 1812 title-page still retained. Brunet III, 862 (41 plates); Cicognara 3402: '40 immense tavole atlantiche ... opera ottima, e insigne, eseguita con nobiltà, e senza eccesso di lusso'; Paola Cassinelli, Carlo Lasinio incisioni (Florence 2004), no. 31 (40 plates); cf. RIBA 1769 (1822 edition).
