Laurits Tuxen (b. Copenhagen 1853, d. s.p. 1927) A summer day with children on the beach at Skagen. Signed and dated L. T. 02. Oil on canvas. 32×46 cm. In 1901, Laurits Tuxen and his wife bought Madam Bendsen's Cottage in Skagen to use as their summer house. This marked the beginning of Tuxen's career as a Skagen Painter, with a special focus on the vitalistic and sunlit coastal views which came to dominate his production in these years. In the present painting, he must have gone down to the beach to paint with all the little grains of sand that have settled on the surface. Maybe it's one of his daughters who is sitting in the sand?
