Engraved title and dedication, hand-coloured etched frontispiece and 90 plates. THE FIRST WORK ENTIRELY DEVOTED TO ROSES. Originally published in 30 numbers, it is dedicated to Queen Charlotte. 'The demand for this book on roses was far in excess of the number of copies printed. At the time it created much sensation as nothing like it had been published before and roses were beginning to take a prominent place in gardens and were rapidly gaining in popularity' (Henrey II p.577). Large 2° (475 x 335mm.). 18 hand-coloured etched plates, without title as issued. (Very minor foxing on 3 plates.) EXTREMELY RARE. Originally issued in 6 parts of 3 plates each, without text. Hitherto only 4 complete copies were known (British Library, Royal Horticultural Society, and Mellon Collection; the Plesch copy was sold in the De Belder sale, 27 April 1987). The Hunt Collection copy comprises only 5 parts (of 6) in the original wrappers, from which the above title is taken. Other imperfect copies are in the Arnold Arboretum and the Massachusetts Horticultural Society. The colouring is very fine. 'She always attached great importance to the quality of her colours, which were all prepared at her own house and under her own supervision' (Henrey II p.580).
