The author was one of the six Jesuits sent to China by the Academie des Sciences and by Louis XIV, in order to promote French interests and evaluate the state of Chinese scientific learning. The work shows a detailed description of the Beijing observatory and numerous astronomical instruments, such as the astrolabes, illustrated here and installed there by Father Ferdinand Verbiest.The work is embellished by the blind tooling on the plates of the gilt coat of arms of the Larochefoucauld family.Cordier, Sinica 39; Western Travellers in China 30.
