Beschreibung:

Leaf from a codex, with short accounts of a soul released from purgatory by a priest saying mass, and two women who heard St. Gregory preach, in Latin, manuscript on parchment [Italy, late fifteenth century] Single leaf, with 30 long lines, apparently added at different stages by a single semi-humanist hand, penwork capitals, small wormholes and slight discolouration, top slightly rubbed, traces of paper on reverse from previous mounting, else fair and presentable condition, 220 by 160mm. Evidently an endleaf from a book used in the fifteenth century for saying Masses, and with contemporary notes on the efficacy of this practise. After an initial statement about the power of Mass to free souls in purgatory, the opening account here describes how two women went to listen to St. Gregory (pope from 590 to his death in 604), and promised to offer such offices for each others souls in the event of their death. When one died, the pact was honoured, and after 3 days of prayer the soul was cleansed and freed. There follow six numbered notes on the redemptive powers of Mass, before another short account of a soul delivered from purgatory by a priest saying Mass.
