Archive
Estimate: £2,500 - £3,500
ca. US$3,217 - US$4,504
Price realised:  n. a.
Lot number 27, Views: 8

Leaf from a large Breviary with bilingual text in Latin and Old High German, decorated manuscript on parchment [Germany, fourteenth century] single leaf, with double column of 36 lines in two sizes of a skilled gothic bookhand, capitals touched in red, red rubrics, initials and paragraph marks in alternate red or blue, remains of one large variegated initial in both colours, recovered from a binding and hence with small holes, scuffs and discoloured areas, overall in good and presentable condition, 373 by 228mm. An interesting example of the use of German as a vernacular guide within the liturgical offices from early in the Middle Ages. This leaf has seven lines of German on the verso and 26 on the recto, mostly adding information on propitious days in the year to use certain services or readings. Close parallels for these readings can be found in other fourteenth-century fragments from the Klarissenkloster in Villingen, in southern Baden-Württemberg (A.B. Fr.1, 2 & 3), a community of Poor Clares, and this use of the vernacular may be associated with female monastic use.
