London:] T. M'Lean, 1841. Folio (535 x 370 mm). Lithographic title vignette and 25 tinted lithographic plates after Lear. Contemporary purple cloth lettered in gilt over a modern backstrip, contemporary yellow endpapers with modern flyleaves and tissue guards. Condition: tissue repairs to verso of title and some plates, light foxing and thumbsoiling, light wear to corners and edges; hinges strengthened. Provenance: Henry Sotheran (bookseller's label). first edition of lear's first travel book which includes several depictions of Rome from different vantage points, the city of Tivoli as seen through the forrest, Roman ruins and the Ancient Gate of Altari . This first edition originally had just over 200 subscribers, including Queen Victoria and several members of the Royal Family, early supporters of Lear's work.
