Illuminated manuscript leaf in Latin on vellum, 270 x 200 mm, Ferrara c. 1445, 2 columns of 30 lines each in an Italian gothic hand, rubrics in red, each side with two full-length illuminated bar borders of burnished gold and blue or pink with central plant knots and terminal and marginal sprays of foliage and flowers in pink, orange, blue, green, red, and brown with gold discs on scrolling tendrils. Five two-line initials in highly burnished gold, three on a blue ground, two on a pink ground, all with white tracery; 9 one-line versal initials in alternating burnished gold with blue penwork and blue with red pen-work. Ink to recto lightly sunned, a few nearly imperceptible holes, three tape-marks to verso. Matted and framed. Provenance: Christie's, 8 December 1958, lot 190; from the library of Stuart and Caroline Schimmel. Single leaf from the Llangattock Breviary, brought to Wales in the early nineteenth century by the Rolls family, later the Barons Llangattock.
