Comprising all the Poems written by Walt Whitman following the Arrangement of the Edition of 1891-'2 Author: Whitman, Walt Place Published: New York Publisher: Random House Date Published: 1930 Description: With 37 woodcut illustrations by Valenti Angelo. (Folio) 36.8x25 cm (14½x9¾"), original red half-niger & bevel-edged Philippine mahogany boards, publisher's device engraved on front board, raised bands, top edge stained, others untrimmed. Printed in handset Goudy New Style type on Unbleached Arnold paper. No. 345 of 400 copies printed by Edwin and Robert Grabhorn. Includes an additional laid-in woodcut signed by Valenti Angelo. Image constitutes the headpiece to Book 10, "Our Old Feuillage" (p. 137). The finest printing of Whitman’s Leaves of Grass and a masterwork of the Grabhorn Press. Taking over a year to print, "The tremendous impression necessary to print this book so strained the press that the printers suggested the colophon should read: '400 copies printed and the press destroyed'" (Grabhorn Bibliography I). GB 138. Provenance: From the collection of Robin and Marsha Garces Williams. Condition: Spine sunned slightly, light rubbing to bands and joints, a few minor scuffs to leather, minor scratches to wood boards; near fine.
