LEHMANN, Felix and Anna]. A collection of letters addressed to Felix and Anna Lehmann by literary, musical and scholarly figures, including: FONTANE, Theodor (1818-1898). Autograph letter signed ('Th. Fontane') to Felix Lehmann, Berlin, 26 January 1892, declining on the grounds of age an invitation to the sixtieth anniversary celebrations for the Magazin fr die Literatur des Auslandes - 'The only thing that an old man wants is to pass his days quietly - to judge by myself at least' ('In Stille seine Tage verbringen, ist das Einzige, das dem Alter noch gefllt, wenigstens wenn ich nach mir urtheilen darf'); (Fontane's masterpiece, Effi Briest , was published three years later, in 1895), 2 pages, 8vo (slight browning at edges); MANN, Thomas (1875-1955). Autograph letter signed to Anna Lehmann, Polding, Weilheim, 17 August 1903, apologising for not having written, thanking her for her praise for his work - he is particularly pleased that 'meine kleinen musikalischen Analysen Ihnen etwas sagen konnte' - and remembering fondly her musical performances, and the quarter of an hour ('oder war es lnger? Jedenfalls ist uns die Zeit sehr rasch dabei ergangen') he once spent applauding her, 1 pages, 8vo (small modern label in upper right corner, small tear at centre fold). The lot also includes autograph letters signed by: Heinrich SCHLIEMANN (refusing an invitation on the grounds of overwork and imminent travel in 1881, the year of his excavations at Orchomenus); August STRINDBERG (1893, enclosing a series of short stories); Ernst HAECKEL (Darwinian zoologist, autograph quotation signed from Anthropogenie (1874), and autograph postcard signed to Dr von Scherzer); Adolph von MENZEL (historical and genre painter); Hans VON BLOW (pianist and conductor, directed first performances of Tristan and Die Meistersinger ), 'Music is to speak for itself'; Arthur NIKISCH (violinist, pianist and conductor) condolences on the death of Felix Lehmann; and others, 13 in total, 14 pages, 8vo and 4to (small modern labels in upper corners, occasional tears to centre folds).
