Baum (lithography) for J.M. Heberle (H. Lempertz), 1853-65. Large 2 o (460 x 295 mm). Published in 12 annual pictorial fascicles. 4 leaves of letterpress, 46 lithographic plates showing numerous reproductions of booktrade documents, some with letterpress descriptions; divisional title, 10 chromolithographic plates of reproductions of 24 medieval and renaissance bookbindings; divisional title, 9 plates illustrating initials, printer's devices, bookplates, etc. Gold-tooled and painted maroon leather binding by Chr. Lempertz of Cologne, brass medallion portraits of Gutenberg, Coster, Didot and Bodoni laid into the front cover at the corners, back cover tooled in blind, brass bosses. The binding is an elaborate but coarse pastiche of a Renaissance example. Lempertz was a Cologne art and book dealer, who was one of the first to realize the importance of reproductions for the study of bookbindings (the others were Tuckett, Cundall, and Libri). See B.H. Breslauer, The Uses of Bookbinding Literature pp. 15-16. BBB Harvard 40.
