Beschreibung:

Printed handbill for rock concert featuring Big Brother and the Holding Company, Quicksilver Messenger Service, and The Gladstones. July 2-3, 1966, Monterey Fairgrounds Dance Hall, presented by Karma Productions. 28x21.5 cm (11x8½"). Notes by Bruce on the back read "Subject matter is the interference with legally constituted authorities," with several words crossed out. Roughly a year before the Monterey Pop Festival, Big Brother and the Holding Company performed at the Monterey Fairgrounds Dance Hall. Janis Joplin had been with the band for only a few weeks and this was one of her first performances with them. The poster is featured in "The Art Of Rock", plate 3.33. The concert was one week after Lenny’s final show at the Fillmore West on June 24-25 and he may have received the flyer there. Bruce died just a month later; we don’t know whether he went to the concert. The sketchy notes on the reverse appear to be related to his legal problems. Only a few random words, but enough to establish the provenance.
