Beschreibung:

Letter by Lugo congregation to Ferrara congregation. Margins of letter contain eight letters by rabbis of Italy. [Italy], [1830]. Letter by Lugo congregation requesting assistance; the letter contains a detailed description of occurrences and hardships in the community, conquest of the city by the French followed by a number of pogroms against the Jews; coercion of the Jews into a ghetto after the retreat of the French, under the command of Pope Leo XII and additional decrees which resulted in the emigration of the wealthy residents, deterioration of the economic state and burden of the taxes imposed upon the Jewish community. The letter mentions Rabbi Sa’adia Gallico and Rabbi Eli Eliyahu Gallico – emissaries of the Lugo community who were appointed to collect funds from the congregations of Italy for the benefit of the Jews of Lugo. Scribe writing in Italian Rashi handwriting. Conclusion of letter contains several additional handwritten lines by Rabbi of Lugo – Rabbi Yosef Tzemach Ovadia Pano, along with his signature, as well as stamps of the congregation. Continuation of leaf contains lengthy letter in the handwriting, signature and wax stamp of Rabbi Yissaschar Regayev, rabbi and Halachic authority in Ferrara, which authorizes that which is written in the letter of the Lugo congregation and appeals to the generous public to come to its assistance. Throughout the letter he also mentions the poor state of the Ferrara congregation. Following this letter, seven Italian scholars during that period, consecutively added letters of authorization and recommendation in their handwriting and signature upon this sheet of paper (approx. 7 to 13 lines each letter). The writers: Rabbi Chananel Nepi of Cento (signs: “Lo LeYodim Chen”); Rabbi Azaria Chaim Sangauniti of Modena; Rabbi Matitya HaLevi of Akvoy; Rabbi Chanania Elchanan Chai Cohen of Firenze; Rabbi Ya’akov Yisrael Karmi of Regeyev; Rabbi Shabtai Elchanan Trivish of Trieste; and Rabbi Pinchas Ashkenazi of Vercelli. Approx. 4 written pages (large folded sheet of paper). 40 cm. Good condition, stains, mildew marks, folding marks and few tears.
