Lot of 23 items relating to the Civil War career of Lt. Samuel Noble King of the 26th Illinois Infantry, including his 1862 commissions as 2nd and 1st Lieutenant signed by Governor Richard Yates, his resignation in October 1864 at the end of his three-year term, and the settlement of his accounts as quartermaster, including a few final clearances dated 1866. Enlisting on August 17, 1861, as a Private in Co. “D,” 26th Illinois Volunteer Infantry, King was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant of Co. A on January 12, 1862, and promoted to 1st Lieutenant just five months later, on June 3, 1862. During his tour, the 26th Illinois saw action at New Madrid, Corinth, Jackson, Missionary Ridge, Kennesaw Mountain and Atlanta. After the war, he was a member of GAR Post # 146 (William T. Sherman) in Bloomington, Illinois.
