LILFORD, Thomas Littleton Powys, Baron (1833-1896). Coloured Figures of the Birds of the British Isles , London: R.H. Porter, 1885-97. 7 volumes, 8° (250 x 158mm). Photogravure portrait and 421 chromolithographic plates finished by hand, almost all after Archibald Thorburn and J.G. Keulemans. (Occasional very light foxing in volumes VI and VII). Green half morocco by Morrell, compartments of spine panelled in gilt, top edges gilt, original wrapper of part 1 bound in at the the beginning of volume I. Lilford's important work on British birds, the set made up of first editions of volumes I-IV & VII, and second editions of volumes V & VI. Apart from the minor fault noted above, a good copy on thick paper. Nissen 563; Anker 308 'beautiful plates'; Zimmer II, p.399. With Patrick Syme A Treatise on British Song-Birds (Edinburgh and London, 1823), 8°, uncut in contemporary boards; and The New British Bird Fancier 12°, 1840, original printed wrappers.
