The Life of Abraham Lincoln, New York: Doubleday & McClure 1900. 4 vols., 4to, later dark blue levant morocco gilt, watered silk endleaves, inner covers with recessed silk-lined panels framed in gilt grey and blue gilt-tooled panels enclosing four inset oval portrait miniatures of Lincoln (2), Mary Lincoln and Lincoln with Tad, g.e., gold silk ribbon markers, matching blue morocco folding boxes for each volume (one box with hinge broken), FIRST EDITION, LAVISHLY EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with approximately 109 original letters and documents (see below), and approximately 340 photographs (including several Brady prints), engravings, prints and ephemera; most inserted matter inlaid or neatly tipped to mounting sheet. (4) MANUSCRIPT CONTENTS: ABRAHAM LINCOLN. Autograph endorsement signed ("A. Lincoln") as President, [Washington, D.C.], 12 April 1862, 10 lines plus dateline and signature, mounted : "I think that J.M. Ainsa, named within, should be restored to the place from which he was removed, or given some place equally eligible; and I shall be obliged if the officer's connected with the Customs at San Francisco will do one or the other." Beneath is a four-line counter-endorsement signed by Secretary of the Treasury S.P. Chase; letters and documents written or signed by: THOMAS JEFFERSON Circular letter signed ("Th. Jefferson") to Governor of Georgia, 11 January 1793, 1 page, 4to, torn along right edge and taped ; forwarding an act of Congress regarding "registering... ships or vessels..." Winfield Scott (ALS, 1865, 3 pages, 8vo ), John A. Logan Jefferson Davis (ALS, 17 January 1887; 1 page, 8vo ; regarding receipt of a book), W.H.
