London: William Heinemann Ltd. 8vo, navy cloth with gilt front and spine, w/ dj, 458pp. Foxing along page edges, toning and handling wear to dj (which is now in a mylar wrap). One photo loose but present. Robert Bontine Cunninghame Graham was a Scottish writer, adventurer and politician. He was educated in an English public school and in Brussels, Belgium. He then moved to Argentina where he made his fortune in cattle ranching. There he became known as "Don Roberto," an appellation that would stay with him his entire life. He traveled after that, going to Morocco (to look for the lost city of Taroudant), Spain (as a gold prospector), to the US (befriending Buffalo Bill), Mexico City (teaching fencing), and more. Many of these adventures he later wrote about in his "sketches" for The Saturday Review. He became friends with many literary figures of the day, such as Joseph Conrad, George Bernard Shaw, Ford Madox Ford, G.K. Chesterton, and others. Toward the end of the 19th century, in spite of a privileged upbringing, Cunninghame Graham converted to socialism and eventually began to speak on the subject. He was elected to the House of Commons where he stood up for the unemployed and preservation of civil liberties. He was badly beaten at the protest demonstration in Trafalgar Square on 13 November 1887, and was subsequently imprisoned for six weeks for his involvement in what would come to be known as "Bloody Sunday." Cunninghame Graham also supported Scottish Independence, as well as Home Rule for Ireland and India, a supporter of women's suffrage, and anti-imperialist. He would go on to found the Scottish Labour Party and later the Scottish National Party, of which he would become the first President. He remained active into his eighties. He died of pneumonia at the Plaza Hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina after visiting the birthplace of his friend William Hudson Condition: Modest wear; near VG.
