LITURGY, Church Slavonic -- [ Octoechus ], Venice: 'printed by command of Lord Bozhidar (Vukovich) ... by the humble monks and priests Theodosius and Gennadius ... of the Monastery of St. Sava of Serbia, Mileshevo ... natives of Pripolye', 1536-1537. Small 2° (260 x 170mm.), 135 leaves (of 162, lacking ff.1, 128-151 and 161-162), printed in red and black in Cyrillic letters, 38 lines, in two columns, woodcut headpiece of SS. Cosma of Mayum, John of Damascus and Joseph (expert restoration throughout, mostly to inner blank margins but with occasional loss to text, some outer edges shaved into text with some loss), 18th-century marbled sheep over wooden boards (re-sewn, later endpapers, later clasps), 20th-century half morocco box. Provenance : early ink inscription in Cyrillic script on verso of first leaf; illegible ink stamp on the recto of leaves 3, 13 and 70. EXTREMELY RARE: Tones 5-8 of from the Eight Tone Book of Canticles of the Eastern Orthodox Church (no copies of Tones 1-4 are recorded). It is the 29th recorded book printed in Cyrillic characters and the 9th of 13 books printed in Venice at the expense of the Vukovich princes of Montenegro who had fled there when the Turks overran their country.
