Long was employed by the Hudson's Bay Company for nineteen years starting in 1768. Throughout his tenure he traveled among the Indians of Canada, gaining a thorough and intimate knowledge of the character, customs and domestic life of the native tribes there. "His is a graphic record of Indian life and customs and of conditions in the fur trade during the furious competition of the Montreal traders among themselves and with the Hudson's Bay Co."
