Long Service Medals from the Collection formed by John Tamplin Five: Captain F. W. Giles, Royal Artillery India General Service 1895-1902, 1 clasp, Relief of Chitral 1895 (24073 Battery Sergt. Major F. W. Giles, No. 8 Mn. By. R.A.) initials and surname corrected; Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 4 clasps, Tugela Heights, Orange Free State, Relief of Ladysmith, South Africa 1901 (24073 Bty. S. Major F. W. Giles, 4th M.B. R.G.A.); British War Medal (Capt. F. W. Giles); Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., small letter reverse (24073 Qr. Mr. Serjt., R.G.A.); Meritorious Service Medal, E.VII.R. (Serjt. Maj. F. W. Giles, R.A.) mounted on ornately decorated silvered pin-bar, contact marks, otherwsie nearly very fine £400-450 Footnote Frederick Wright Giles was born on 10 January 1863, and joined the Royal Artillery in January 1882. He served as a Battery Sergeant-Major at the Relief of Chitral 1895 and in South Africa during the Boer War. He received the L.S. & G.C. medal in 1902 (A.O. 15 of January 1902), was promoted (Regimental) Sergeant-Major, R.G.A., in January 1904, and awarded the M.S.M. in 1905 (A.O. 5 of January 1905). Sergeant-Major Giles went to pension on 1 January 1909. During the Great War he was granted a commission as Temporary Lieutenant in the Durham Light Infantry in February 1916, and became Adjutant of the 21st (Reserve) Battalion, D.L.I. He relinquished his commission in August 1919, and was granted the rank of Captain.
