LONICER, Phillip (d. 1599). Chronicorum Turcicorum tomus primus [- tertius ]. Frankfurt: Sigismund Feyrabend for Johann Feyrabend, 1578. 3 volumes in one, 2 (322 x 210mm). Woodcut title vignettes and illustrations, woodcut publisher's device on colophons, large and small historiated initials. With blanks *4, yy4 in volume III (Title to vol. I dust-soiled with some staining at inner margin, piece torn from lower and hole at upper margin, preliminaries to the same vol. also somewhat soiled, i6 with small soil mark affecting two letters, occasional tears or pieces torn from blank margins in all three vols., some marginal waterstains particularly in vol. III, final quire of vol. I bound in at end of vol. III as part of index but without the blank k4.) Early calf (rebacked and recornered, covers with central armorial removed, upper joints slightly split). Provenance : indistinct signature on title to vol. I; Livingstone (early signature on *4 in vol. III). FIRST EDITION. Phillip Lonicer, brother of the German naturalist Adam Lonicer, contributed the general account of the Turks in volume I which also contains works by Menavino, Aventinus and Georgievitz. Volume II contains works by Leonard of Chios, Fontano, Sabellico and others, while volume III contains Barletius's life of Scanderberg and an account of the siege of Skodra. The woodcuts, which include portraits of sultans, battle scenes, embassies and executions, are attributed to Jost Amman A second edition appeared in 1584. Adams L-1455; Blackmer 1030.
