LORRAINE CONNELLY NORTHEY (born 1962, Waradgerie Language Group) Narrabong 2006 wire and flat iron 107 x 44cm (base excluded) PROVENANCE: Gallery Gabrielle Pizzi, Melbourne Private collection, Melbourne OTHER NOTES: Lorraine Connelly Northey was born in Swan Hill and is of Waradgerie descent. The artist creates traditionally inspired artefacts through the use of rustic metal wires, mesh and corrugated iron, symbolising a shared history lived in coexistence with a settler colonial society. The materials she collects are discarded waste including old iron, coiled wire and rusted tin 'embodying the past, their battered surfaces imprinted with the passing of time'. Her practice references the traditional grass and sedge weaving techniques indigenous to the women of the Mallee and Riverina regions. Estimate $1,000-1,500 Condition: Work is in very good condition. Corrosion and natural wear to the surface is intentional. Work is presented on a custom made timber base. The opinions expressed in the condition reports are a guide only and should not be treated as a statement of fact. Prospective buyers are encouraged to inspect articles for sale at our pre-sale viewing where Leonard Joel staff are available for advice.
