LOUIS ANTOINE, COMTE DE BOUGAINVILLE (1729-1811) A Voyage round the World. Performed ... in the years 1766, 1767, 1768, and 1769. By Lewis de Bougainville ... Commodore of the Expedition, in the Frigate La Boudeuse, and the Store-ship L'Etoile. Translated from the French by John Reinhold Forster. London: for J.Nourse and T.Davies, 1772. 4° (259 x 205mm.). 1 folding engraved plate, 5 folding engraved maps. (One map shaved into plate area, three plates with small tears repaired with adhesive tape, text offset onto the plate.) Contemporary calf (later spine label, spine and extremities worn, joints split). Provenance : Ever. Buckworth (inscription, dated 1774); Davies Gilbert (armorial bookplate); Rupert Vallentine (signature). FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. 'According to the title, this translation was made by Johann Reinhold Forster; it seems, however, that the real translator was Georg Forster, while his father contributed the preface, dedication, and the numerous footnotes ...
