drypoint on paper signed and dated in pencil ‘Cane 7.6.88’ (lower right) and numbered 90/110 (lower left) plate: 41 x 38 cm (sheet 60 x 47 cm) executed in 1988 Provenance: Private collection, South of France Executed in 1988, the period when Louis Cane returned to figuration after his spilt with the Supports/Surfaces group. Born in 1943 in Beaulieu-sur-Mer, Cane studied interior design and both fine and decorative arts before embarking on a career in painting and sculpture. He was a memeber of the French group Supports/Surfaces, established in the revolutionary atmoshephere of the late 60’s (1969-1972), opposed to the the second School of Paris, proclaiming that practice should be connected with theory. After the group fell apart in the early 1980s, Cane came back to figuration. His works have been exhibited internationally, includint at the Georges Pompidou Centre in Paris, Château de Chambord, the Sao Paulo Museum of Modern Art, the Maeght Foundation in St Paul de Vence, and the Museum of Modern Art in Nice, in the “The Spirit Supports/Surfaces” exhibition at the Shaanxi History Museum in Xi’an, China and in the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York. “Je passe de l’abstrait au figuratif environ tous les dix ans. Aujourd’hui, je fais les deux ensemble, ce qui est d’une parfaite immoralité par rapport aux certitudes de l’art contemporain... Les peintres ne prennent pas de risques, de peur de rater leur tableau. Ils se cachent derrière des systèmes, des méthodes et ils s’y tiennent” - Louis Cane 1995
