LOUIS ROEDERER Originally founded in 1760 as Dubois, Père et Fils, the firm became Roederer in 1833, after Louis inherited the business from his uncle. The Cristal luxury cuvee was originally made to order for Tsar Alexander II and was of a sweeter style actually made in crystal bottles. The firm has impressive vineyard holdings in Ay, Hautevillers, Cumières, Louvois, Verzey, Verzenay, Vertus, Avize, Chouilly and Le Mesnil. These grand crus are vinified separately and small steel vats and then aged in large oak barrels which gives the house its distinctive vanilla, nutty richness. Cristal is generally half Pinot Noir and half Chardonnay, with some vintages containing slightly more Pinot. Louis Roederer Brut, Cristal--Vintage 1985 Reims In original carton "This wine is now in a dormant phase where the nose is slightly less luxuriant than in its youth. The 79 went through the same rest period at a corresponding age, then went on later to bloom in full splendor. The 1985 Cristal is otherwise just as delicious as it sounds - an aristocratic Champagne with a wonderfully long aftertaste of crème caramel." Richard Juhlin, 4000 Champagnes 6 magnums per lot
