Three volumes. 20th century cloth with leather spine labels. 8 x 4 5/8 inches (20 x 12.5 cm); 742 pp. (with a folding chart); 696 pp.; 513, [3], 167, [1] pp. Some chipping to the binding labels, light wear and soiling to the bindings with labels at the foot of the spine, front hinge cleanly separated between the English and French titles, marginal abrasion to a small section of the second volume at fore-edge and lower margin, lacking two leaves from signature 2N in the third volume, some foxing, spotting and toning, a few ink annotations throughout and manuscript tables to the rear blanks, in all a sound copy of a very scarce work. Martin started his career in New Bern, North Carolina as a teacher and a printer, before being admitted to the North Carolina bar, and he wrote and edited a number of legal works on the law of that state. He served two terms in the lower house of North Carolina's General Assembly. In 1809 he was appointed Attorney General of the Territory of Orleans. He was also a Supreme Court judge for the Florida Territory from 1810-1813, and with the State Supreme court (1815-46). C The New York City Bar Association
