LUIGI SAULINI A MID 19TH CENTURY SHELL CAMEO PENDANT OF A GENTLEMAN CIRCA 1860The oval shell cameo carved with the profile of a bearded gentleman wearing a suit and neck tie, signed L. Saulini F. within a polished gold surround, with triangular baleSize/dimensions: 7.8cm long including baleGross weight: 35.9 gramsLuigi Saulini (1819-1883) was the son of celebrated Italian cameo carver Tommaso Saulini (1793-1864), who had studied under Thorvaldsen. Based in Rome, the Saulini workshop produced cameos based on classical designs and works, but they also produced carved shell cameos of the aristocracy as souvenirs of their Grand Tours. Luigi was at his most productive during the 1860s and 1870s. The costing of a shell cameo was approximately a tenth of the cost of a hardstone cameo
