Eleven items related to lunar photography from the first mission of the Orbiter. Ten NASA press photographs, gelatin silver prints, of images of the Moon taken by the Lunar Orbiter 1, each showing a different section of the craterous surface. The photographs include the first high resolution image of the Moon's far side, never seen from the Earth. The collection includes three official NASA "Black Number' prints: L-66-6358, L-66-6400, L-66-7838. Also included are the following images: 66-H-1120, 66-H-1117, 66-H-1114, 66-H-2362, 66-H-1293, 66-H-1300. Four of the prints feature NASA captions printed on the reverse (two mimeographed in violet and two in black) while others retain press captions affixed to the reverse, providing the details of the time and date when the photographs were taken as well as the stations which received and released the photographs All photographs measure approximately 26.5 x 20.5 cm (10 ½ x 8 inches), with margins. Accompanied by NASA press release number 66-251 Lunar Orbiter Circles the Moon, Snaps Pictures, for immediate release on September 14, 1966, announcing the first pictures of the Moon taken by Lunar Orbiter I. The Lunar Orbiter program was a series of five unmanned lunar orbiter missions launched by the United States from 1966 through 1967. The aim of the program was to select Apollo landing sites by mapping the Moon's surface. The missions provided the first photographs from lunar orbit and photographed both the Moon and Earth. In all, Lunar Orbiter took 200 photographs with medium and high resolution lenses. Lunar Orbiter 1 was launched on the 10th August 1966. During its 35-day mission, Lunar Orbiter 1 collected an enormous quantity of data on the topography of the lunar surface. A total of 413 high- and moderate-resolution photographs were taken.
