LUTHER, Martin (1483-1546). Autograph letter signed addressed to Gerhard Wiskamp, n.p. [Wittenberg], 29 May 1529, in Latin , writing in reply to a letter from his correspondent which his assistant has mislaid, and referring to a gift which proved the affection also conveyed in the letter, 'Nam in summa animi tui studium in illis declarari sensi id quod & munuscula suggerunt', sending one of his works to the sister who sent him the gift and declaring that he will gladly send Gerhard whatever books he lacks which are printed here (i.e. Wittenberg). 11 lines written on one leaf, 170 x 210mm., addressed on the verso 'Servo Christo Fideli d. Gerardo Xantho Lampadario meo in Domio Charissimo', small paper seal showing monogram 'ML' and rose, traces of green wax (slightly discoloured, splitting at folds with loss of '9' in date, skilfully repaired); with related material showing the provenance of the letter since 1720 . Gerhard Wiskamp of Xanten, called by Luther his 'Lampadarius' or bringer of light, was Rector of the Augustine Friary at Herford, and a prominent adherent of the Reformation.
