MAD No. 16 Author: Place: Publisher: Entertaining Comics Date: October, 1954 Description: CGC certified: Fine/VF (7.0). Off-white to white pages. Elder, Wood & Kurtzman art. 1st use of "Underground" in connection with comic books. "Comics Go Underground: In this remarkable photo, we see a comic-book publisher whose books have been banned from the newsstands, secretly peddling his comics on a busy street corner..." One of Kurtzman's best covers, anticipating the Underground ethos 14 years before Zap Comix #1. Bill Gaines parody (selling comic to boy). "It was a relatively short step from MAD to... the 'underground comix' created a decade later by a mad generation. In Dan O'Neill's Air Pirates Comics [sic] for instance, Disney characters were swept through the muck, f*cking and cheating and swearing... while R. Crumb's Fritz the Cat, Mr. Natural and other characters indulged in attitudes and acts that previously only existed in the nether regions of mainstream consciousness." -Tom Englehardt, The End of Victory Culture: Cold War America and the Disillusioning of a Generation [NY: 1995]. CGC census: Seven 7.0 copies. Comparable CGC sales: No sales in this grade in six years. Closest recent results: $225 for 6.5 copy (Dec., 2019); $210 for 7.5 copy (Jan., 2020).
