MALTHUS, Francis. A Treatise of Artificial Fire-Works Both for Warres and Recreation: with divers pleasant Geometrical observations, Fortifications, and Arithmeticall Examples. In favour of Mathematicall Students. Newly written in French, and Englished by the Authour Tho. [sic] Malthus. [London:] Richard Hawkins 1629. Small 8° (160 x 100mm). Engraved ellegorical title, woodcut printer's device on title, 37 engraved illustrations and woodcut diagrams, some attributed to Wenceslas Hollar, woodcut headpieces and initials (worming to engraved title and to margins of first few leaves, one engraved illustration laid down, one leaf torn into text without loss, some small pieces of margins torn away not affecting text, occasional light staining and spotting). Contemporary speckled calf rebacked in old style with green morocco lettering-piece (corners rubbed, a few scuff marks). Provenance : Mark Dineley (armorial bookplate); Robert Wilcox (early signatures at end, with others); early inscription on rear endpaper in psuedo Gothic script. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH. The first edition, in French, was also published in 1629. STC 17217.
