Typed agreement signed between Katherine Mansfield, John Middleton Murray, and the publisher Martin Secker for the operation "of a publication at present known under the name of Rhythm hereinafter called the Publication." [London] 28 March 1913. 2 pages, 4to, carbon copy, single-spaced, pinned together at upper left corners, a little age-toned , signed by Mansfield, Murry, Secker, and two witnesses, initialed by the three principals at lower corner of first page, with a 4-line addendum clause in Mansfield's hand at bottom of second page: "It is understood that the word 'profits' in clause 9 above represents that portion of the revenue from all sales and advertisements which is in excess of its cost of production (composing, printing, binding & paper)." Rhythm , a quarterly founded by Murry, Michael Sadleir, and John D. Fergusson in the summer of 1911, published the work of Murry, Mansfield, Rupert Brooke, W.H. Davies, etc., but suffered from constant financial troubles. This agreement represents a last desperate attempt to keep it going -- actually as The Blue Review (although not named in this agreement), which ran for a few issues (publishing a D.H. Woolmer 2: "A few copies, number not known, were issued with a line block...on the front wrapper. The block had been selected by Katherine Mansfield, but Virginia Woolf didn't like it and it was dropped from later copies. [ With :] (1) Two checks made out to Katherine Mansfield by S.S. Koteliansky (writer and editor), London, 22 May and 21 June 1919, for five and two pounds, one endorsed by her on verso, both cancelled; (2) Check made out to D.H. Lawrence by Koteliansky, London, 23 July 1920, for five pounds, endorsed by Lawrence twice on verso. (5)
