Both items have been thrown in buff clay, which Cowan’s earliest pieces were made from. The vase is pictured as Plate 728 in “Cowan Pottery and the Cleveland School” by Bassett and Naumann. There is a tight, trident-shaped crack at the rim of the underplate.
