Title: Manuscript bill of sale for a "Negro Woman" sold for $600 Author: Place: Tensaw, Baldwin County, Alabama Publisher: Date: April 1st, 1862 Description: 12 line, in ink. on half-sheet of lined paper, 13x19.5 cm. (5¼x7¾"). H.J. Davis and R.A. Davis, whose names (perhaps signatures) appear at the bottom of the document, have "Received from Jos. Silver Six Hundred Dollars in full pay and satisfaction for one Negro woman, Slave for life, named Nancy... aged about twenty five years, said woman Nancy we warrant sound in boddy, and mind, also guarantee the title from all persons claiming thereto and will forever defend." It was with such brief and informal documents that lives were traded, even as the Civil War raged. Lot Amendments Condition: A little aging, fine or nearly so. Item number: 256336
