first approx. 5.5 x 7", 25 May 1863, Cabarrus Co., N. Carolina. Manuscript form for the sale of 25-year old Isoue? to John McDonald for $2500 by W. L. Archibald. Second is 6.25 x 7.75" partially printed dated 1 Jan 1866(?), appears to be a contract for one year for Algeria Hall to perform the duties of servant for J. Davis for the sum of $4 and his clothes, plus appropriate food and housing. The contract could only be terminated before the end of the year by an appearance at the Freedman's Bureau. Seems like quite a "deal" - $4/year versus $2500 purchase price (food, housing and clothing would have been the same for both) - let's see, about 625 years of work to equal that price. Maybe the Confederacy should have done that earlier and saved a war! With any luck, free men could eventually negotiate a higher rate than that, something slaves could never do. Condition: Bill of sale heavily toned (the South was short on materials by '63), expected folds with complete separation of one. Second has expected folds, ink a bit light, else fine.
