(Mexico - Texas War) Manuscript broadside regarding naval recruitment to execute the war against the Texas colonists Place Published: Estado de Durango, Mexico Date Published: May 25, 1836 Description: Ink manuscript on recto only of sheet of Sello Cuarto de Oficio. 20 lines plus printed heading. 27x21.5 cm (10½x8½"). Rare document from the Texas war for independence from Mexico, roughly translated: "I certify that at 4.30 p.m. of yesterday we received a letter from the Soberano Congreso General regarding the acceptance of the employment by this Government in the service of the National Navy, Frigate Captain Don Jose Maria Martinez and the other individuals of the same origin, if the need arises they are trustworthy, to finish the War against the Texas colonists and to stop the smuggling in the ports and coasts of the Republic. This order is to be published and posted in the usual places. Dated in Durango, May 25, 1836." Perhaps slightly incongruous in that Durando was landlocked, with no ports or coasts.
