Title: Manuscript Diary of a young woman who emigrated to the Hyde Park Area of New York Author: ** Place: New York Publisher: Date: 1857-1858 Description: Manuscript diary in pencil, written within a "Universal Pocket Diary and Almanack for 1857." 10.5x6.5 cm. (4¼x2½"), bound in morocco, all edges gilt, with custom cloth drop-back box. Entries in the diary are concise (there is very little space to write), and usually note social events ("played quoits at Hinckley's. Won a bouquet"), as well as travel and general notes. She sets sail for New York on the Steamship Vanderbilt on August 22nd from Southampton. The Vanderbilt only made a couple of transatlantic voyages (mostly for emigrants going to the United States) before being sold to the U.S. Navy. The author seems to have settled in the Hyde Park area of New York, as there are various mentions of the area. Included with the diary is a small note from a Gertrude (sister?) enclosing "...a piece of Mamma's hair," which has been twisted into a decorative pattern as a keepsake. Lot Amendments Condition: Some rubbing to morocco; very good. Item number: 223296
