Pemberton, 1814-1881, a West Point graduate who, like so many, joined the Confederate army upon Secession. Rising to lieutenant-general, he commanded Tennessee, Mississippi and eastern Louisiana at the time of General Grant's siege of Vicksburg, and he took personal command of the defense, only surrendering when heavily outnumbered and totally without food on July 4, 1863. The document itself gives personal information on Private Hackett (27 years old, 5'9", grey eyes, black hair, born in Kilkenny, Ireland, a shoemaker, etc.), when he enlisted, when last paid, his clothing account, etc. With small handwritten label describing the document affixed to lowe right margin.
