Illustrated throughout with facsimile maps, many of which are folding. (Folio), green cloth, spines lettered in gilt. One of 350 copies of this facsimile edition. Reprint of the first edition, which was issued by the Grabhorn Press in San Francisco over the period 1957 to 1963. The author successfully attempted to "trace the opening of the American West by studying the succession of maps which, beginning in the 1540's, accurately trace the paths of the explorers and the record of the resulting growth of knowledge. A monumental and exceptionally thorough work detailing our expanding knowledge of the American West, unlikely to be surpassed.
