First Edition. Anarcharsis was an early 6th Century Sythian Prince / Explorer (B.C.) included as one of the Ancient Seven Sages, who travelled from his homeland on the northern shores of the Black Sea to Athens. After extensive travels in the ancient World described in his work, he returned home where he was killed by the Syths because he wanted to introduce the cult of the “Great Mother of the Gods.” This is the atlas volume from the author’s seven volume (plus atlas) work, which includes outstanding maps of the ancient world by D’Anville and DuBoca. Text portion titled: "Critical Observations on the Maps of Ancient Greece: Compiled for the Travels of Anacharsis the Younger" by Barbié du Bocage. Lot Amendments Condition: Scattered light foxing (chiefly on view plate), extra inserted map with tears (one large) mostly along folds, small crease at gutter of Ancient Greek Theatre plan in back causing slight ripple-effect to surrounding leaves, other mild age wear; else very good or better, in an attractive fine modern binding.
