MARINO, Giovanbattista (1569-1625) and Gasparo MURTOLA (1560-1624). Fine manuscript copy of 'Le Murtoleide Fischiate che fà il Cavalier Gio Battista Marino al Dottore Gasparo Murtola', with 'Le Marineide Risate che fà il Dottore Gasparo Murtola al Cavaliere Gio Battista Marino', 'Capitolo Dello Stivale Del Cavalier Gio Battista Marino' and 'Invettiva Contro il Vizio Nefando Del Cavalier Gio Battista Marino', n.p., n.d. [early 17th Century]. 8°, 181 leaves, blanks, title decorated with ruled borders in three colours and flourishes coloured in yellow, text decorated throughout with flourishes coloured in yellow (stain to upper right corner of title page, short tear to f.46). Green morocco janseniste by Duru, 1855. Provenance : Baron Horace de Landau (monogrammed bookplate). Marino, the leading Italian baroque poet, circulated his satiric assault on fellow poet Gasparo Murtola while living at the court of Savoy, having been expelled from a number of other Italian courts for immoral behaviour and trying to publish his poetry. His opponent, however, profited from his position as secretary to Duke Carlo Emanuele by having Marino imprisoned. Influential friends secured Marino's release in 1615, and he retreated to France. The Murtoleide was published in 1619; a combined edition with the Marineide was published in 1626 under a (possibly spurious) Frankfurt imprint. It evidently circulated widely in manuscript before 1619.
