Marlborough (John Churchill, first Duke of, army officer and politician, 1650-1722) Order signed to Thomas Erle, Lieutenant General of His Majesty's Ordnance, appointing Stephen Anthony and James Swift "to serve & provide Lighters and great and small Boates at Woolwich to carry Guns, Carriages, Shot and other Stores of Warr from thence to Tower Wharf, Deptford, Greenwich... Or elsewhere", Document signed "Marlborough" and countersigned by his secretary "Ja Craggs", manuscript, laid down, Marlborough's papered armorial seal at the head (2 tears), tears along folds, 2 corners torn with small loss, browned, folio, 24th December 1714. ⁂ Issued in the first year of the reign of George I, a few months after returning from exile in the final years of Queen Anne, and restored as colonel of the 1st foot guards, master-general of the ordnance, governor of Chelsea Hospital and a privy councillor.
