MARLENE DIETRICH (1901-1992) Large format photograph inscribed for Harold Arlen. A vintage gelatin silver print close up portrait of Dietrich inscribed for Harold Arlen "Please remember Christmas in Las Vegas - and Marlene/1953." The photograph not signed or stamped by likely by George Hurrell 14 x 11 inches (36 x 28 cm). Generally fine with minor edgewear, a slight handling crease at lower right has just broken the surface . Provenance: A Portion of the Harold Arlen Archives, Property of Mrs. Rita Arlen A dramatic portrait of Marlene Dietrich inscribed for Harold Arlen after spending Christmas together in Las Vegas in 1953. Dietrich and Arlen had known each other for at least a decade before this photograph was inscribed and the two have been romantically linked. Dietrich starred in the 1944 MGM film Kismet , with music by Harold Arlen and E.Y. Harburg and recorded Arlen and Johnny Mercer's classic "One for My Baby (and One More for the Road)" for her 1954 album Love Songs . In December 1953, Dietrich made her cabaret début at the Sahara Hotel's Congo Room in Las Vegas, where she reportedly earned a staggering $30,000 per week for a three week stand. The shows were a great success, breaking previous Las Vegas attendance records, and Dietrich rotated a series of revealing gowns by designer Jean Louis of which she said "The only thing underneath the $8,000 'revue costume' was a gaiter belt to hold the stockings, period." C A Portion of the Harold Arlen Archives, Property of Mrs. Rita Arlen
