Mary Cassatt (American, 1844-1926) Sketch of a Head of a Girl in a Hat with a Black Rosette, alternately titled Fillette aux cheveux blonds Unsigned, titled "Fillette" on an unattributed gummed label affixed to the back of the frame, with ink and wax stamps from A.M. Reitlinger and Christie's auctions (see below) on the reverse. Oil on canvas laid down on board, 9 3/4 x 12 3/4 in. (24.8 x 32.4 cm), framed. Condition: Very minor surface grime, reverse of the support with scattered abrasions and wear. Provenance: From the artist to Mathilde Vallet (housekeeper and companion to Cassatt), 1927; Vente Collection Mlle X, Paris, March 30, 1927, no. 30; to Chester Dale; to Dr. B.D. Saklatwalla; sold by Parke-Bernet Galleries, Inc., New York, May 1, 1946, Lot 41; to a Private Collection; to Rictavia S. Schiff; by gift to a Private Collection, 1989; to Christie's New York, Important American Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture, November 30, 2011, Lot 64 (sold with the approval of the Trustees of the Philadelphia Museum of Art to benefit the Acquisition Funds); to the current owner.
